Another poem by Ming from Bangladesh, age 12, about the feelings of the old Lighthouse in Five Go To Demon's Rocks:

How The Lighthouse Feels

Situated on Demon's Rocks is me
A lighthouse by the sea,
Saving the lives of many ships
With rainwater on my window in drips.

Built by the raging sea
Standing there so tall,
Pale grey is the colour of me,
Like a grey and shining shawl.

The Demon's Rocks around me cause holes,
They wreck many ships,
But I am there to save the souls
With thanks pouring out of lips.

My great light can be seen for miles
And with me are the cries of gulls,
The captain on a ship smiles
As he sees the light from the hulls.

And there would come a raging storm
Which tries to wreck the ships and me,
But I'm seen as clearly as a horn
Saving the lives on the sea.

But the time had come for the end of my powers,
As someone else takes over from me,
Another lighthouse is built, now on High Towers
Which is seen clearly from the sea.

My days are long and dreary,
As my light no longer shines
No more whistles of the man who was cheery,
And made my magestic bells chime.

I spend all my time moping and asking for relief,
Suddenly I start gulping in pleasure,
For Julian, Dick, Anne, George, Timmy, Tinker and Mischief
Come to me like treasure.

They're planning to hunt for treasure that's forgotten
When two evil folks lock them in
But the Famous Five's brains haven't rotten
And they get things going and grin.

The Five plan to shine my light,
Oh joy! - I'm awake once more!
I use all my strength to fight
The evil lockers of the door.

The two baddies are full of fright
They plan to run - Oh, naughty Ebbie and Jacob!
But my bells are are rung by all of Julian's might,
Which brings out all the people in a mob!

The Five and Tinker are let out
Their faces are pale,
But the villagers, in delight, shout
For fame the children did hail!

Oh what adventures the had gone through
Everything had succeeded!
Hurrah for the Five! - it was baddies they defeated
And to Ebbie and Jacob - BOO!

My days are happy once more,
I'm all nice and bright!
Fame is around my shore
And my heart is carefree and light!

A short story and a poem by Ming, both based on the Adventure series:

Jack Gets Into Trouble

Philip, Dinah, Lucy-Ann and Jack were lying miserably in bed. It was the summer holidays and they wanted to go out. Kiki the parrot was even more upset. There was no one to play with and she was not even allowed to make some noises! This was the boringest time she was having while the children were sick. She could at least talk to Bill and Mrs Cunningham at other times. Now not even that, as they too were also ill. Kiki was very down in the dumps indeed.

"Of all the illnesses we have had this is just about the worst!" said Philip mournfully.

"Even mother and Bill are having a terrible time. Mother's worrying herself to death as there's no one to look after us during this hateful time of whooping cough!" Dinah moaned.

"I feel as I can't survive another day!" said Lucy-Ann.

"Poor Kiki, what a pity!"mourned Kiki.

And what's wrong with you Jack? You're always so fidgety for the past week!" snapped Philip, taking no notice of poor Kiki. "I can hardly go to sleep at night, you always keep the lights on! It's a pity the switches are by your bed!"

"Can't help it," Jack replied. "I've been thinking."

"About what?" chorused the others, incuding Kiki.

"My article," said Jack, calmly. "You remember that Great Auk I saw on the Isle of Gloom? Well, I wrote to the Nature Magazine about it!"

"Wrote to the Nature Magazine!" Philip, Dinah and Lucy-Ann shouted. Then they all stopped, scratched their throats and coughed for a long time. Philip recoverd first.

"Are you nuts? You know you never saw a Great Auk! It's been extinct for years!! What will people say if that magazine published that wretched article of yours!"

"They won't say a thing! They'll be proud to know that Jack Trent has seen such a rare bird, believed to be extinct, A GREAT AUK!" Jack said.

"Oh no, they won't!"raged Dinah. "They'll...." Dinah couldn't finish her sentence as a series of coughs overtook her.

"Ah, ah ah ooh a-ti-shoo!" Kiki imitated her. Dinah glared at Kiki.

Jack was by now feeling alarmed. Ever sinced he had told Bill ages ago that he seen a Great Auk, Bill had told him they were extinct, Jack must have seen a razorbill. Razorbills were very like Great Auks to look at. Every one except Lucy-Ann had believed that. She would believe anything that her beloved brother said, Jack knew that very well. She had comforted him when the others had scorned at his idea of a Geat Auk. So far Jack had been sensible and not said a word about it for a long time. But now, in this extremely boring time of whooping cough, he couldn't bear it. He had written to the magazine hoping the published article would make him feel better. He looked at Lucy-Ann for sympathy.

"I don't think people will laugh at you Jack. They'll think it is wonderful. Don't worry," Lucy-Ann said comfortingly. She stopped as she heard a voice from downstairs. It was Aunt Allie calling. She sounded surprisingly annoyed.

"JACK! HOW DARE YOU! JACK!"

Mrs Cunningham, or Aunt Allie as Jack and Lucy-Ann called her, burst into the room.

"Jack Trent, you thought it was very clever of you to make a fool of yourself and make the people laugh! Well it wasn't!"

She held up a Nature Magazine close to Jack's face. What he saw absolutely filled him with horror. On the cover page was a picture of himself with Kiki on one shoulder and a Great Auk on the other. Two fingers were held behind his head, so that he looked like a donkey. And good gracious, written in big black letters were the words:

JACK TRENT CLAIMS TO HAVE SEEN A GREAT AUK AND MAKES A FOOL OF HIMSELF.

NOW you see, what your silly stupid Great Auk has made you look like. Everyone, absolutely everyone knows that they are extinct and now people think you are a fool! They will never honour us because Bill's such a good detective, no, they will look down on us as you have brought your town into everyone's notice in such an embarrassing way!" Mrs Cunningham said without a single pause.

Mrs Cunningham's outburst frightened the four children considerably. As for Kiki, she was nowhere to be seen. She had flown under the bed at Mrs Cunningham's first shout. Mrs Cunningham was such a good-natured person that it was very difficult for them to see her so angry. Their faces were white with fear. Bill would be even angrier.

Jack recovered first. "But-but-bu Aunt Al-al-allie..." he stuttered, "I-I-I thought everyone would be pleased."

"Honestly mother, he did think so," Philip somehow said.

"Mother, he seriously did. He thought that article would please you and help you to recover fast," said Dinah.

Lucy-Ann burst into tears. The others felt very like crying to. However angy they were with Jack at first, he was still a relative and a very good friend indeed. They blinked back tears. Just then, Bill came into the room, looking furious. He held up the newspaper he brought. The headlines read:

THE UNUSUAL FAMILY OF CUNNINGHAM, TRENT AND MANNERING ARE NOW CONSIDERED FOOLISH.

"What do you make of this?" Bill demanded angrily. "I tell you..."

But the children didn't want to hear any more. They all jumped out of bed, Kiki flew out as if from no where and they all fled in spite of their moans and groans. They were all getting a bit too tired of lectures!

The Adventurous Lot

Philip, Dinah, Lucy-Ann and Jack
Are the four adventurous children,
They have a parrot called Kiki
And Detective Bill Smugs is their friend!

Philip's mad on all animals
Starting from lizards that are hurt to cows that are lame,
He always has animals over his person
Oh Philip really deserve fame!

Dinah's Philip's hot tempered sister,
She just can't bear Philip's pets,
She often kicks him hard
And a punch is what she gets!"

Lucy-Ann is the youngest of the group,
She's so quiet and good,
Lucy likes the open air
And just loves picnic food!

Jack's crazy over all kinds of birds,
He has a parrot called Kiki,
He has freckles over freckles
And can often be cheeky!

Bill Smugs name's actually Bill Cunningham
He's always tracking down foul play,
He's a really brave secret police
Oh good old Bill saved the day!

Kiki is Jack's parrot
She's often saying 'wipe your feet!'
She's a verry funny character
And other's words she repeats!

So these are the adventurous lot
They poke their noses in trouble,
When there's any suspicion about,
All their fists are doubled!

A rhyme by Jade Ralph, Age 6:

Amelia Jane is naughty again,
It is all her fault that we have rain.
She is a pest,
But she thinks she's the best.
Someone has got to tell her that someday,
By the way.
She can be rude,
She can be naughty,
But we should love her all the same.
